As part of a fun project to raise awareness on water management issues, the children of C1 class, under the guidance of their teacher Mrs Smaro, transformed themselves into aspiring journalists. Armed with small notebooks and full of curiosity, they interviewed their D1 classmates about myths and beliefs about water. From stories about fairies inhabiting springs to superstitions about when it is a good or bad time to drink water, the answers they gathered were highly interesting and often amusing, revealing a whole world of popular beliefs about nature's most precious commodity.
After the success of the interviews on water myths, the young journalists took on a new, equally important task: to investigate the water saving and water management habits of their E1 classmates. This time, their questions focused on whether they turn off the tap when brushing their teeth, whether they take short showers instead of baths and whether they inform the grown-ups of any leaks they spot. They also asked what other actions they had been doing throughout the year. The responses they received highlighted a variety of behaviours, from children who were already aware and implementing many good practices, to some who had never given the issue of water waste serious thought, providing valuable insights into the information and awareness needs of the children's community.
Excited by their recent action on the Almyros River, in Georgioupolis, the E2 class students were the focus of the attention of their younger classmates in the 3rd grade. With undiminished interest, the younger children asked about the details of their visit to the river, the water quality testing procedures they carried out, their findings and the feelings the experience generated. The E2 pupils were happy to share their knowledge and impressions, passing on their enthusiasm for scientific research and the value of environmental protection to the younger pupils in the school.
After completing the interviews, the students gathered to discuss their findings. They shared the different opinions they heard from their classmates and discussed what they think can be done to protect our water resources, suggesting ideas such as not littering and recycling. They shared thoughts on how trash and chemicals end up in our water and how this affects fish and other creatures. The discussion revealed a remarkable awareness among the young students about environmental responsibility, highlighting their hopes and concerns for a cleaner planet.
